Freehold, NJ — The first annual iPlay America Science Fair was held Sunday, June 11 at iPlay America in Freehold, NJ. More than 50 students in grades third through twelve from 30 schools across New Jersey competed for top honors. A team of six judges evaluated and scored each project based on creativity, thoughtfulness, scientific procedure, and other criteria. Students competed in three categories: Grades Third through Fifth • Sixth through Eighth • Ninth through Twelve.

“Participation in iPlay America’s first-ever Science Fair was enthusiastic,” said Jessica Schwartz, vice president of sales and marketing. “The entries were very creative, smart, and impressive. We really enjoyed hosting this community event that showcased New Jersey’s bright young scientists.”

Three first place prize winners each received a $1,000 check presented by Amboy Bank, a trophy, and a $500 iPlay America gift card. These winners include:

Mena H, a fourth grader from Applegate School in Freehold, NJ. Family Fingerprints – A project designed to determine if fingerprints are genetic by comparing the fingerprints of three families.

Isabella V, an eighth grader from Toms River Intermediate East in Toms River, NJ. Tanushri S and Jeel S, juniors from High Tech School in North Bergan, New Jersey. The Effect of Cellular Radiation – The project involved exposing an experimental beehive to the cellular radiation to test the hypothesis that honey bee populations decline due to cellular radiation emitted from cell phones disrupting the overall behavior of bees.

These second place winners each received a $500 check and $250 iPA gift card. They include:

Hailey S, a third grader from Walter M. Schirra Elementary School Old Bridge, NJ. Creating Energy From Food – The project experiments with different foods to measure their chemical energy.

Jeffrey M, Deepak G, John G, and Stephen T, who attend Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School in Freehold, NJ. The Brachistochrone Problem – The experiment attempts to solve the Brachistochrone problem using a cardboard model of a Brachistochrone curve as well as various other types of curves.

These third place winners were each awarded a $100 check and $100 iPA gift card. They are:

Samhita P, a fourth grader attending Walter M. Schirra School in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Aqua Bot – This project centered on developing an underwater robot that can be used for scientific exploration to carry out jobs that would otherwise be difficult for humans to do.

Kyla W, a seventh grader from Grace M. Breckwedel Middle School in Jamesburg, New Jersey. What Food Do Dogs Prefer –Testing multiple food groups to see what type of foods dogs actually prefer.
