For immediate release, Thursday, July 17, 2014 Freehold, N.J. – iPlay America and ConcussionRXCare will present a free lecture titled “Concussions in Youth Sports: What Every Parent and Coach Needs to Know” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at iPlay America.

Stephen G. Rice, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.S.M., director of sports medicine for the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and David Bertone, P.T., D.P.T., O.C.S., president and owner of ConcussionRXCare at db Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

During the lecture, attendees will learn the basic science of concussions and to:

• Recognize the signs and symptoms

• Perform sideline assessment

• Determine an immediate course of action

Rice and Bertone will also discuss how to start a baseline concussion-testing program and the components of a post-concussion rehabilitation program.

“iPlay America is committed to the Freehold area community and is happy to partner with ConcussionRXCare in hosting this important lecture,” said Jessica Schwartz, director of marketing for iPlay America. “We want our children to benefit from participating in athletics, but we also need to understand when an injury like a concussion should keep them off the court or field. This lecture will provide the essential knowledge that coaches need to make on-field decisions.”

Freehold Deputy Mayor Anthony Ammiano agreed.

“Area youth sports leagues and organizations are collaborating to increase concussion awareness and Freehold Township sports groups are taking the lead by organizing this event,” Ammiano said.

Dennis Mojares of Freehold Soccer League Training and Development is excited for the event.

“I believe that this free lecture will have a positive impact on our club. Many athletes don’t report concussion symptoms to their coaches and parents because they just don’t know what the symptoms are like,” Mojares said. “Because baseline testing usually occurs early on in the season, the very act of getting tested will raise concussion awareness for athletes, parents, and coaches and establish an emergency protocol to follow in the event of when a concussion occurs.”

Discounted baseline testing will be available at the event. Seating is limited and registration is required.
